SAVE EVERY DROP - How to Manage a Wine Business in Challenging Economic Times
It is no secret that operating in the Australian wine sector remains extremely tough. The over‑supply of grapes and wine, and under-demand from Australia’s principal export markets, make it very challenging.
Having said that, there are opportunities and some people are doing well.
Australia’s grape growers and winemakers are generally very good at what they do, but most of them have not been trained in commerce or business management. What can they do to optimise the performance of their business in really difficult financial circumstances? This seminar is designed to give you some tips as to initiatives you might be able to adopt to put your business on a more sound financial footing.
Each year, Finlaysons and their friends visit ten or so leading viticultural regions of Australia to impart their legal and commercial wine industry knowledge to winemakers and grape growers. Finlaysons will be accompanied on the road again this year by Australian Grape & Wine and Wine Australia. They will provide global industry context and explain what is being done at industry level to create efficiencies so that the benefit of your levies is maximised. They will also discuss how they are endeavouring to mitigate the over-supply of grapes and wine and grow demand for Australian wine globally.
One of Australia’s leading wine sector business consultants, KPMG, will advise on what a wine business can do to remove cost and improve efficiency, to give itself the greatest opportunity to succeed in the current environment.
Finlaysons will then advise on the legal obligations of business owners when times get tough financially and how those obligations can be managed in a way that enables the business to move forward positively. Finlaysons will also discuss how wine sector participants can work together to run their businesses more efficiently.
If you want to improve the financial performance of your wine business, this seminar is for you, even if you are doing quite well at the moment. If you are seriously struggling, attending this seminar might just put you on track to save your business.
Attend Wine Roadshow 34 to save every drop!
Despite rising costs, we have kept Wine Roadshow pricing unchanged for the past 10 years—because it is important to us to bring your local wine community together each year to share insights and help you succeed. This year we have also extended our discount so you can bring along as many family members and non-family staff as you like at the reduced rate, provided you buy one ticket at full price.
- Approved Association* member $99 per head (plus GST)
- General admission $149 per head (plus GST)
- Each additional family or staff member attending receives a further $20 discount
*Approved Associations: Australian Grape & Wine, Wine Communicators of Australia, WISA, SAWIA, Wine Victoria, Wines of WA, Wine Tasmania and NSW Wine
The seminar commences at 1:45 for 2:00pm.
The seminar will run across 3 hours with afternoon tea, followed by drinks and canapes for a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Wines of the Ancient World: a wine tasting and class
Join Erin Dudley in a casual seated wine class where we will discuss the wines made in regions that have been making wine for millenia!
When we talk about wine, we often split styles into two categories - Old World and New World. However, many history and wine scholars have started to point out that wine production dates back to 6000 BC, well before the modern production of wine in France and Italy. Before Ancient Greece spread wine knowledge west, the Phoenicians, in modern day Lebanon, were producing wine and trading it across their domaine.
Join us for a casual seated wine class where we will discuss the ancient history of of wine, and taste some wines produced in the ancient wine regions to the east with Wine Director, Erin Dudley, at the Planet Wine!
Included with your ticket:
- Seated wine class with with Wine Director, Erin Dudley
- Tasting of six fine wines from ancient wine regions
- Small serving of artisanal cheese and bread to accompany your tasting
- Discounts on bottle purchases of all wines tasted

The Great Wine Capitals Annual Conference 2026 is designed for wine and tourism professionals, business leaders and innovators seeking international exchange. For example, topics include the future of wine tourism, green destination development, market opportunities and cooperation between regions. Furthermore, Hawke’s Bay provides a compelling setting with its celebrated Syrah, Cabernet blends and Chardonnay, as well as its food and wine culture. Therefore, regional visits show how landscape, hospitality and wine production work together.
Registrations are open through the official conference website. Meanwhile, international and New Zealand delegates can review participation options, programme details and regional experiences online. However, exact venues, travel arrangements and individual sessions may be updated by the organiser. Therefore, participants should check the latest official information before booking flights or accommodation. Finally, early planning is advisable for international travellers because the programme runs across five consecutive days.
Hawke’s Bay joined the Great Wine Capitals Global Network in 2023. Consequently, hosting the annual conference places the New Zealand region on an international stage and gives delegates direct insight into its vineyards, producers and tourism expertise. In this way, the event combines professional development with a deeper understanding of a distinctive wine destination.
